The exterior of the Manhattan Beach Library is a stylish glass-paneled building, revered as one of Los Angeles’s most beautiful libraries. Nestled in the heart of Manhattan Beach, patrons can enjoy stunning views of the Pacific Ocean from the second floor’s large windows, truly offering a serene setting for reading and learning.
Visitors to Manhattan Beach should not miss the Manhattan Beach Library, located on Highland Avenue near the coastline. Its striking glass design features colorful round glass at the entrance that sparkles in the sunlight. Upon entering this contemporary library, you’ll be greeted with ample natural light and wooden walls that create a warm, inviting atmosphere, perfectly aligning with the beach theme. Unique ceiling fixtures, like octopus-shaped chandeliers, enhance the playful vibe of the space.
Although its architecture feels modern, the library is deeply rooted in history, having been integrated into the Los Angeles County library system in 1915, making it one of the oldest libraries in the area. In 2015, a renovation led by HED and Johnson Favaro transformed the library into a stunning two-story, approximately 21,500-square-foot facility, emphasizing an open, transparent, and aesthetically pleasing design. In addition to its extensive collection of books, the library features dedicated spaces for children’s and teen activities, as well as a meeting room that accommodates up to 80 people, ultimately earning a Gold LEED certification for its sustainable design.
Since its opening, the second floor’s west-facing windows have become the library’s most popular spot. From there, visitors can gaze at the Pacific Ocean, just a few blocks from the beach, with breathtaking views, especially on clear days when the vibrant blue waters are fully visible. For those wishing to explore further, it’s just a short walk of two to three blocks to the beach, where the atmosphere is more tranquil and relaxing compared to the hustle and bustle of Santa Monica. Strolling along the shoreline or resting on the porches of nearby coastal mansions offers a perfect escape.
The beachfront homes in the area often showcase festive decorations, particularly around Halloween. Notably, at 1300 The Stand, there’s an eye-catching pink mansion that has become a favorite photo spot for visitors. Some Chinese students were spotted taking pictures during my visit, expressing their admiration for the house’s beauty, which they felt had a charming Victorian style reminiscent of Europe.
The library’s operational hours are Monday to Wednesday from 10 AM to 8 PM, Thursday to Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday from 1 PM to 5 PM. It is located at 1320 Highland Ave, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266.
