In a recent interview in Jos, representatives from the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) announced an important update regarding the local government elections. In light of a significant voter turnout, the commission has decided to extend the voting hours from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Koro Yakubu, the Head of Media for PLASIEC, addressed the changes, stating, “We want to inform the public, political parties, candidates, and all stakeholders that the voting period for the ongoing local government elections in Plateau State has been extended. Initially set from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the new closing time will now be 5:00 p.m. at certain polling units.”
Yakubu highlighted that this extension was prompted by unforeseen challenges, particularly the delayed arrival of essential materials at some polling locations across the state. “The commission is actively working to resolve these issues to ensure all materials are in place and that every voter gets the chance to cast their vote,” he elaborated.
He also provided clarity on the technical difficulties faced with the Voter Accreditation Software (VVS) in select areas. “The issues have been addressed, and Presiding Officers have reverted to manual registers. Voting has resumed, as confirmed by the Commission Chairman, Plangji Cishak.”
Yakubu reassured the public that the technical team is diligently working to restore smooth operations. “We are fully committed to ensuring the integrity of this election. Every vote will count, and we promise citizens that no eligible voter will be disenfranchised because of these delays.”
The commission expressed gratitude for the public’s patience and understanding, emphasizing their commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections. Meanwhile, the collation of results from this largely peaceful electoral exercise has begun at various centers, according to the latest updates.
