Several schools in New York and New Jersey have been affected by meat products contaminated with Listeria. According to the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), nearly 12 million pounds of potentially contaminated meat have been recalled, some of which have made their way into schools in these states. As of the latest announcement, around several dozen schools are currently impacted.
The FSIS has released a list detailing the schools involved, which includes 21 institutions in New York, covering areas such as Newark, the Bronx, Harlem, Valley Stream, New Hyde Park, Roosevelt, and several locations on Staten Island.
Notably, the New World Preparatory Charter School, with campuses in the East, West, and South, appears on this list. As of now, the school administration has not provided any comments regarding the situation on their official website or social media platforms.
The recalled meat products were produced between June 19 and October 8 of this year, with retailers affected including Costco, Trader Joe’s, Target, Walmart, Amazon Fresh, and Kroger. The latest update from the USDA on October 18 highlighted specific items being recalled, such as Trader Joe’s pesto chicken wraps and lemon chicken with arugula salad, among various ready-to-eat items listed at 7-Eleven.
The contaminated meat was produced by BrucePac in Oklahoma. After the presence of Listeria was confirmed, the company halted production and initiated a recall of the affected products. They are currently working closely with the USDA to inform both consumers and distributors about this issue.
FSIS emphasizes that Listeria poses a significant risk to vulnerable populations, including the elderly and pregnant women. Symptoms of infection can include fever, muscle aches, and headaches.
