Guardiola- Manchester City will not be ‘dragged down’ like United after I leave

Pep Guardiola expressed confidence that Manchester City will maintain stability even if he decides to leave next summer. This reassurance comes in light of the departure of the club’s sporting director, Txiki Begiristain, who confirmed he will exit at the end of the season. Guardiola reflected on the situation at Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in May 2013, noting, “I don’t know what happened there, but I’m pretty sure stability will prevail here. It would be a bad sign for the club if everything fell apart following the exit of just one person. I’m certain that the executives will address any challenges that arise, and they know exactly what to do.”

He emphasized that during difficult times, the club’s management would find solutions quickly, asserting, “They will be patient and calm about it. Absolutely, I have no doubts about that.” He acknowledged the long tenure he and Begiristain have had, which has created a strong bond but also affirmed that change is a natural part of football life. “Of course, we can move on. Life continues,” he added.

Guardiola also addressed the ongoing absence of Kevin De Bruyne due to a muscle injury, stating he remains unaware of when the Belgian midfielder might return. He pointed out some key players on the team nearing the end of their careers, like Kyle Walker and Ederson, and hinted at the important decisions facing the club regarding recruitment next summer, especially with Hugo Viana set to take over for Begiristain. “Every summer presents its own challenges, and the club needs to be prepared,” he commented. “You might think everything’s fine with a young squad, but then a couple of players might express a desire to leave. It’s critical to see how things unfold.”

When asked if he was consulted about Viana’s appointment, Guardiola replied, “No, I provided my opinion on various matters, but I haven’t spoken to Viana yet.”
