On October 23, the Guangdong Provincial People’s Procuratorate announced that Zheng Jiange, the former deputy secretary of the Shantou Municipal Committee and the former mayor of Shantou, is facing charges of bribery. The case has been assigned to the Jiangmen City People’s Procuratorate, which has formally filed a lawsuit with the Jiangmen Intermediate People’s Court. The investigation is ongoing.
During the indictment stage, the prosecuting agency informed Zheng of his legal rights and conducted a formal questioning, during which they also considered the defense counsel’s opinions.
The Jiangmen City People’s Procuratorate’s charges outline that Zheng Jiange, in his various official capacities—including deputy secretary and mayor in Zhanjiang, a standing committee member in Zhaoqing, and mayor of Shantou—has exploited his positions for personal gain. He allegedly solicited substantial bribes in connection with business operations, project contracts, and personnel transfers, with the amounts involved being particularly significant. As a result, he faces criminal liability under bribery laws.
