On October 24th, the center of Typhoon “Tam Mei” (Tropical Storm level) was located in the northern part of Luzon, Philippines. According to the Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Bureau, cold air combined with the outer circulation of “Tam Mei” is expected to significantly increase wind speeds across various sea areas from October 24th to 27th, including the Bashi Channel, Taiwan Strait, northern and central South China Sea, coastal waters of Guangdong, Qiongzhou Strait, and Beibu Gulf.
Meteorological experts predict that “Tam Mei” will move westward at a speed of 10 to 15 kilometers per hour and enter the eastern part of the northern South China Sea by late afternoon on October 24th, gradually intensifying to tropical storm or typhoon strength. Mariners are advised to take precautions against the winds, and those involved in offshore work, as well as tourists on islands and coastal areas, should prioritize safety.
Looking ahead, experts forecast that “Tam Mei” will slow down and begin to rotate after October 27th, with a gradual weakening of its intensity. With the combined effects of cold air and “Tam Mei”’s outer circulation, wind speeds over the northern central South China Sea are expected to reach between levels 8 to 10, with gusts up to level 11, while areas near the storm’s center could experience rotating winds of levels 11 to 12, and gusts of levels 13 to 14. From October 25th to 26th, various cities and counties in Guangdong will experience northerly gusts ranging from levels 5 to 7.
The Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Bureau has reported a notable decrease in temperatures in the region during the day of October 23rd into the morning of October 24th. On October 24th, the morning lows were recorded between 10°C to 14°C in northern cities like Shaoguan and Qingyuan, while southern areas ranged from 18°C to 21°C, and most other cities fell between 14°C to 18°C.
Experts remind the public to be cautious in the coming days: while much of Guangdong will experience dry and sunny weather, it’s important to be mindful of forest fire risks and safety regarding household fire and electrical use. Additionally, with significant temperature variations between day and night, dressing appropriately for the cooler mornings and evenings is advisable. Local authorities also warn that strong northerly gusts pose risks for falling or toppling items such as billboards and movable objects on balconies.
