An Irish university offers a four-year Internet celebrity course, enrolling 15 people in the first batch_1

In a recent interview with Irene McCormick, the academic director at South East Technological University in Carlow, Ireland, she discussed the explosive interest in social media influencer careers among Generation Z. The university recently launched a summer crash course titled “Digital Hustle” aimed at aspiring influencers, which garnered overwhelming interest—drawing 350 applicants for only 30 available spots. This surge in demand prompted McCormick to consider developing a formal degree program focused on influencer education.

“When you think about it, becoming an influencer is one of the hottest career paths right now,” McCormick stated. “Survey after survey shows that most Gen Z individuals, born between 1997 and 2012, are open to pursuing careers as vloggers, YouTubers, or live streamers.”

With her background as a television producer and director, McCormick expressed the allure of these roles. “The appeal is remarkable, and it’s clear that demand is on the rise. That’s why we decided to elevate the course to a degree level.”

After two years of development, the university has officially launched a four-year Bachelor’s program called “Content Creation and Social Media,” which has already welcomed its first cohort of 15 students as of September.

The curriculum covers a range of essential topics, including the psychology behind creative media and storytelling, entrepreneurship skills, celebrity studies, data analysis, and podcast production. Students will also gain hands-on experience through practical sessions involving camera and microphone operation, as well as internships in real-world settings.

McCormick noted, “Approximately 70% of marketers today believe that influencers are the future of marketing. Governments worldwide are also leveraging influencers to communicate messages to the public. This is how we are navigating the market today.”
