Diljit Dosanjh review – bhangra and beats ignite an arena-sized Punjabi party

At OVO Hydro in Glasgow, we had the unique opportunity to experience the phenomenon that is Diljit Dosanjh, widely regarded as South Asia’s biggest pop star. With an impressive career featuring 13 studio albums and over 40 singles, Dosanjh has established himself as a trailblazer, shattering boundaries that few South Asian artists have navigated. This year, he made history as the first Punjabi artist to perform at Coachella, and his Dil-Luminati tour kicked off in Vancouver with what became the largest Punjabi music concert outside of India.

As the crowd gathered, Dosanjh made a grand entrance that left everyone in awe. A film featuring vibrant highlights of his performances played on the big screen, accompanied by his tranquil voiceover in Punjabi. An AI-generated voice then asked the audience to prepare for the show, introducing him with words that resonated: “He is born to shine, a rockstar, a hero, a mystic.” This set the stage for an unforgettable night.

With military precision, a group in black took their positions as Dosanjh rose from beneath the stage, launching into “Goat,” the title track from his 2020 album. Elevated on a platform, he commanded the stunning pyrotechnics and streamers that illuminated the venue, while the Hydro dazzled with the glow of fans’ phones as they captured the fiery display and captivating lasers.

What distinguishes Dosanjh is his remarkable ability to seamlessly blend traditional and modern influences. His dance performances featured a mix of bhangra choreography, Punjabi rhythms, and folk instruments like the dhol, all while integrating contemporary trap beats and synthwave elements. This eclectic fusion resonated with his diverse, multi-generational audience, to whom he frequently expressed sincere gratitude in Punjabi. Fans responded with exhilarating sing-alongs during hits like the sultry “Peaches” and the irresistibly catchy “Hass Hass,” which featured an animated appearance by Sia on screen.

As the show moved into its second half—where spectators were refreshingly undeterred by a 30-minute intermission—Dosanjh swapped his elaborate red kurta for a more laid-back outfit of jeans and a black tank top. He then delivered a string of fan favorites, including “Lemonade,” “Lover,” and “Patiala Peg.” Those who had remained seated during the first half were now on their feet, swept up in the infectious energy of the moment. The tender notes of “Ikk Kudi,” showcasing his soulful vocals and devotional roots, seamlessly transitioned into the high-energy Bollywood vibes of “Choli Ke Peeche.” There was never a dull moment throughout his two-hour performance.

The Dil-Luminati tour has truly become a celebration of culture, global exchange, and community spirit. Diljit Dosanjh will continue to light up stages across the UK until October 18, ensuring that audiences are treated to more unforgettable experiences.
