On October 18, the 70th anniversary celebration of the Tongdao Dong Autonomous County was held in Huaihua, Hunan Province. The SaSui Square was adorned with colorful flags, and the sounds of drums and music filled the air, creating a festive atmosphere. Dressed in traditional attire, people from various ethnic groups gathered to sing and dance, marking this significant occasion together. Congratulations were sent by delegations from the National People’s Congress, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, as well as representatives from Hunan Province and Huaihua City.
Interviewing a local representative, we learn that Tongdao is situated at the intersection of Hunan, Guangxi, and Guizhou provinces. Often referred to as “the southernmost part of Chu” and “the gateway of the Hundred Yue,” the county was officially established on May 7, 1954, making it the first autonomous county for ethnic minorities in Hunan Province. It has a total area of 2,239 square kilometers, home to approximately 240,000 residents primarily from the Dong ethnic group.
Over the past 70 years, under the enlightened guidance of the party’s ethnic policies and strong support from higher-level government bodies, successive county committees and governments have united and led the local population in seizing opportunities and working diligently. The economic and social landscape of the county has undergone significant changes, earning 15 national honors, including titles for national ethnic unity and progress demonstration and ecological civilization construction. In 2023, the county’s GDP reached 6.82 billion yuan, reflecting a growth of 2.1 times since 2014, with an average annual growth rate of 7%.
The county’s industrial development has also gained new momentum, focusing on its primary and distinctive industries. The industrial development zone has evolved from non-existence to superiority, with the number of industrial enterprises above designated size increasing to 56, up by 28 since 2014. Urban and rural areas now display a revitalized landscape, with a built-up urban area of 6.61 square kilometers. Residents’ happiness has improved significantly, supported by quality education, effective healthcare initiatives, thriving culture, and strengthened social welfare.
Following the celebrations, a grand cultural performance themed “Building a New Tongdao and Advancing into a New Era” took place. This engaging program was segmented into four chapters: “Remembering Our Original Intent,” “Building a New Tongdao,” “Building the Chinese Dream,” and “Moving Forward Together.” The performance seamlessly blended the area’s rich cultural traditions with modern influences, showcasing the spirit of unity and progress among the diverse ethnic groups in Tongdao.
During the festivities, the county also organized a variety of dynamic events, including “Tongdao has Drama – One Township One Product,” a community stage, a 70th-anniversary achievement exhibition, and a fireworks display, providing a comprehensive overview of the remarkable achievements in economic and social development over the past seven decades.
