In a recent interview, Andrea Tenenti, spokesperson for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), addressed the escalating tensions between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. On October 12, Tenenti revealed that Israel has requested UNIFIL to withdraw from its positions along the Blue Line, a demarcation line established by the United Nations that separates Lebanese and Israeli territories, including the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
“They asked us to either leave our positions along the Blue Line or withdraw five kilometers from it,” Tenenti stated. “However, we have collectively decided to remain.”
This comes amid ongoing clashes between the IDF and Hezbollah that have drawn international condemnation. The IDF has faced accusations of attacks on UN peacekeeping troops stationed in southern Lebanon, prompting widespread concern and criticism from various nations. On October 11, the IDF announced it is investigating these allegations.
