According to recent monitoring by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the national vegetable planting area has reached 105 million acres, with a rich variety of autumn vegetables hitting the market. With the cooler weather settling in the north, crops like cabbage, scallions, and potatoes are being harvested for winter storage, commonly referred to as “winter storage vegetables.” How are the market prices and sales trends shaping up?
While visiting a vegetable sales point in Changchun, Jilin Province, I observed that cabbage, scallions, potatoes, and root vegetables suitable for pickling, such as radishes, peppers, and mustard greens, have become increasingly popular among consumers, with sales rising by an average of 40% compared to last month.
Local vendors reported that most vegetable prices have remained stable, although the price of cabbage has increased by about 30% compared to the same time last year due to adverse weather conditions in the producing areas, including rainfall.
Overall, the supply of vegetables in Changchun is quite abundant, and the sales of winter storage varieties have seen a noticeable increase. Nationwide, the average price of cabbage in the third week of October was 2.31 yuan per kilogram, reflecting a 12% decrease month-over-month but a substantial 57.6% increase year-over-year.
