On the evening of October 1st, a significant event unfolded during the National Day celebrations: the inaugural large-scale immersive Tulou Intangible Cultural Heritage Night at Datian Village in Xiandu Town, Huian County—a UNESCO World Heritage site in Zhangzhou, Fujian province. Locals and visitors eagerly gathered for a night filled with the magic of the Tulou.
As darkness descended, the festivities ignited with the vibrant, rhythmic sounds of the Yingge dance and the beating of gongs. Dancers, their faces adorned with vivid paint, showcased their energy against the backdrop of traditional music, their movements synchronized in a thrilling display that included striking wooden mallets and gracefully spinning their wrists. This captivating performance marked the beginning of an unforgettable cultural exploration.
The evening continued with an awe-inspiring demonstration of National Intangible Cultural Heritage, featuring performers dressed in fireproof suits gracefully wielding flaming bottles. As the flames soared into the night sky, the fire dancers enthralled the audience, who watched in amazement, gasping and cheering while capturing the breathtaking spectacle on their phones.
The crowd followed an enchanting procession led by the Flower God and accompanied by fish lanterns, meandering through the ancient village and the impressive Tulou structures. Attendees experienced a variety of cultural displays, including a vibrant light show in front of the ancient stage, breathtaking firefalls, and heartfelt musical performances by a traditional ensemble at the water platform. Interactive activities with the Gaoshan people, such as savoring Zhuang wine, added to the excitement, along with lively hand-holding dances and the intriguing artistry of a face-changing master.
This remarkable event showcased ten distinct intangible cultural heritage projects, highlighting the rich cultural significance of Fujian Tulou in a contemporary setting while preserving invaluable traditional skills.
